One of the largest aviation projects ever undertaken in Australia

Brisbane’s New Parallel Runway project has been named as a winner in the ‘Project Value Greater Than $75 Million’ category at the 2020 Civil Contractors Federation Queensland Earth Awards.

Held as part of the Excellence in Civil Construction Awards, the awards recognise excellence in project delivery including construction management, innovation, environmental and social management.

Delivered by CPB Contractors in a joint venture for Brisbane Airport Corporation, the project included construction of a 3.3km long, 60m wide runway, a 12km taxiway system, lighting, utilities, signage and 300 hectares of landscaping.

Five million cubic metres of bulk sand earthworks were also completed, 100,000 tonnes of aircraft grade asphalt used and 175,000 cubic metres of concrete produced on site.

The project delivered enormous local benefits for the industry with more than 3,700 people and 300 subcontractors inducted and 90 percent of construction materials provided locally.

The project reached practical completion in April and was officially opened on July 12 with the first flight departing Brisbane for Cairns.

The project was one of largest aviation projects ever undertaken in Australia.
