Sydney Metro, Australia’s biggest public transport project, opened to customers on 26 May 2019.

Delivered on time, the Metro North West Line, with thirteen stations between Tallawong and Chatswood and 4000 new commuter car parking spaces, is a fully automated, fully-accessible railway, connecting Sydney with fast, safe and reliable services.

CIMIC Group CEO Michael Wright said: “The Sydney Metro is truly world-class transport infrastructure, introducing new generation trains and technologies. With customer safety and service at its heart, it will connect families and communities, enhancing growth and bringing great benefit to the North West region.

“CIMIC Group congratulates Sydney Metro and all who have been involved in the project’s successful delivery. We’ve been proud to have our companies CPB Contractors, UGL, Pacific Partnerships and EIC Activities contribute our experience and integrated rail solutions, and we’re now supporting operations, and delivering major contracts for Sydney Metro Stage 2.”

Turn up and go

Metro Trains Sydney (MTS) will run the new metro trains every four minutes at peak times at full operational mode in the North West – that’s 15 trains an hour each way, with the ability to run more in the future.

Safety first

The national rail safety regulator was involved throughout extensive commissioning.

Key safety and accessibility features, providing an unrivalled customer experience, include lifts at all stations, level access between platforms and trains, and platform screen doors that keep people away from tracks and allow trains to get in and out of stations much faster.

CIMIC Group’s integrated rail solutions

CIMIC Group companies delivered two of three major contracts for the 36 kilometre, $8.3 billion Sydney Metro Northwest.

Our companies contributed integrated rail solutions to the project, playing key roles in Sydney Metro Northwest’s development, delivery and operations – Pacific Partnerships, (equity investment), CPB Contractors (design and construction) and UGL (systems, operations and maintenance), with EIC Activities’ specialist engineering and technical services support.

Tunnels and Stations Civil work

CPB Contractors, with joint venture partners John Holland and Dragados, delivered the $1.15 billion contract to build the 15km twin tunnels between Bella Vista and Epping, as well as the civil works for the new stations and services facilities.

Operations, Trains and Systems (OTS) PPP

Pacific Partnerships, CPB Contractors and UGL, as part of the Northwest Rapid Transit consortium, delivered the $3.7 billion operations, trains and systems contract – the largest Public Private Partnership (PPP) ever awarded in NSW.

This included delivering eight new railway stations, more than 4000 commuter car parking spaces, Sydney’s new metro trains and upgrading the railway between Chatswood and Epping.

Under the OTS PPP, CPB Contractors was part of the infrastructure joint venture with John Holland, and UGL was part of the Systems joint venture, with MTR Corporation, designing and delivering the tunnel systems, new metro trains, rail signalling and overall control systems.

Also through the PPP, Sydney Metro Northwest will be operated and maintained for an initial concession period of 15 years by Metro Trains Sydney (MTS), a joint venture of UGL, MTR and John Holland.

Sydney Metro city extension

CIMIC Group is delivering two major contracts as part of the Sydney Metro City and Southwest project which is extending metro rail under Sydney Harbour, through new underground central business district (CBD) stations and beyond to the south west.

CPB Contractors and UGL’s combined capabilities are delivering an end-to-end result, covering design, construction and commissioning of the project.

Tunnels and station excavation works

In June 2017, CPB Contractors, with joint venture partners John Holland and Ghella, was awarded a $2.81 billion contract to deliver twin 15.5km tunnels and associated civil works for Stage 2 of Sydney Metro, including a new crossing deep under Sydney Harbour.

Line-wide works package

In November 2018, CPB Contractors and UGL were awarded a $1.376 billion contract to deliver the Line-wide works package including tunnel rail systems, new and upgraded metro trains facilities, as well as tunnel ventilation, mechanical and electrical systems for underground stations and power systems.
