Bringing broad benefits to local economies and communities

CPB Contractors, as part of the Canberra Metro consortium, worked with the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Government to design and construct the first stage of Canberra’s light rail project.

Fellow CIMIC Group companies, Pacific Partnerships and UGL, joined CPB Contractors on the Canberra Metro consortium, as well as John Holland, Mitsubishi Corporation, Aberdeen Infrastructure Investments, DB Engineering & Consulting (formerly Deutsche Bahn International), CAF and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Ltd (MUFG).

The ACT Government opted for a Public Private Partnership (PPP) to deliver a sophisticated infrastructure investment and state-of-the-art service for the people of Canberra.

The Canberra light rail project delivers a high quality, reliable and frequent public transport service.

Collaboration and innovation

Our team focused on providing innovative design solutions and construction methodologies that delivered value for money, mitigated construction impacts and enhanced light rail operations.

The first stage of the Canberra light rail project included design and construction of a 12km light rail route from the fast-growing area of Gungahlin to the City, with 13 stops, depot, road, signalling and preparatory works and the ongoing operation and maintenance of the light rail system.

The project’s design and construction phase was completed in late 2018, with operations commencing shortly thereafter.

The CIMIC Group’s role in the Canberra Metro consortium spans sponsorship, design, construction, operations, maintenance and equity.

CPB Contractors delivered the design and construction in a joint venture with John Holland.
