Road upgrade training leads into full time employment

Sixteen Indigenous trainees, have successfully completed their Certificate II in Civil Construction, delivered onsite at our Port Wakefield Overpass and Highway Duplication Project.

A strong partnership between the Port Wakefield to Port Augusta (PW2PA) Alliance, Intract and TAFE SA identified a group of trainees with barriers to education and employment and help them gain the right skills and experience they need to build their career in construction.

All participants had the unique experience of completing their training onsite at our Port Wakefield Overpass and Highway Duplication Project, providing a worthwhile insight into the workings of a live construction site.

Ran over 16-weeks, the training program delivered the Plant and Equipment component of the Certificate III in Civil Construction, providing an insight into the next stage for those wanting to continue their training and potentially undertake an apprenticeship.

A testament to the quality training delivered and the participant's commitment to the program, all trainees have now secured employment. Some trainees remain at Port Wakefield with the PW2PA team, and others have been employed by Intract, Buttrose Earthmovers, BMD and Dunns Earthmoving.

Intract Chief Executive Officer John Briggs explained that this program was a joint effort by those coordinating it and the participants.

"PW2PA, TAFE SA and our Intract team have worked hard to coordinate and deliver this training program, but it is important to recognise the effort of the 16 participants travelling to Port Wakefield every day and committing to be out of their comfort zone every day," he said.
PW2PA Alliance General Manager, Dallas Keane, explained that this had been a rewarding experience for everyone involved.
