CPB Contractors’ delivery of Transport for NSW’s Warringah Freeway Upgrade includes the construction and modification of twelve structures, including four shared user bridges: Ridge Street, Falcon Street, Ernest Street (widened by 10 meters), and High Street (widened by 4.5 meters) which will improve pedestrian and cyclist connections across the busy freeway in Sydney's CBD.
Designed to enable safer and more efficient movements, the shared user bridges feature integrated Indigenous artworks across each bridge, enhancing the user experience through cultural storytelling and Connection to Country.
CPB Contractors Project Manager Steven Clark explains that the project team is focused on minimising disruption during the delivery of these connections.
“We’re utilising CPB Contractors’ pre-cast facility to create all concrete bridge elements ahead of time. These mega pieces mean we can install them in a blitz-like process and minimise disruptions to traffic and residents,” said Steven.
A 750-tonne crane lifts these pre-cast elements and 19 steel girders into place, with the heaviest segment weighing 120 tonnes.Once delivered, the Warringah Freeway Project will improve traffic flow, simplify the complex road corridor, and create better connections for users.
CPB Contractors’ joint venture delivery of the project includes:
- Upgrading four kilometres of the Warringah Freeway between North Sydney and Naremburn
- Improving interchanges with Falcon Street, including a new northbound on ramp at High Street
- Improved public transport links, with a continuous southbound bus lane from Miller Street to the Sydney Harbour Bridge
- Around 2.5 kilometres of new and upgraded cycleways and pedestrian paths, integrated with public transport networks.
