As part of the Department for Infrastructure and Transport's Fleurieu Connections Alliance (FCA) project, CPB Contractors recently welcomed a group of Wirreanda High School students from the Clontarf Academy to its Aldinga compound for a behind-the-scenes look at what a career in construction can entail.
During the visit, students heard from various project team members, including representatives from Surveying and Human Resources, supervisors, and the project's General Superintendent. Each team member shared their personal career journey, including a breakdown of the skills and qualifications they had when they entered the industry and what they have learned on the job since. It was also a valuable opportunity for them to connect with this group of young men to hear their own career aspirations and stories.
A highlight of the visit was a hands-on activity facilitated by the project survey team. In a designated safe area, the students participated in a practical session using GPS technology, which gave them insight into how surveying can contribute to the development of digital engineering designs.
The purpose of the Clontarf Academy student visit was to introduce students to the diverse career opportunities available within the construction industry, explained CPB Contractors Community and Stakeholder Manager Kirsty Hogarth.
“There are many pathways into the construction industry… and it was great to share what some of these have looked like in real life”, said Kirsty.
The visit was made possible as part of CPB Contractors' ongoing national partnership with the Clontarf Foundation. This not-for-profit organisation aims to improve the education, discipline, life skills, self-esteem, and employment prospects of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men.
