CPB Contractors’ construction of the Cross River Rail underground station at Albert Street has reached a major milestone, with the construction of the 220-metre platform and mezzanine level at Albert Street station underneath Brisbane’s CBD now complete.
An impressive feat of engineering that involved meticulously lowering prefabricated components into an underground cavern, this milestone includes the construction of:
- Mezzanine level: Built by lowering 180 precast beams, each 19 metres long and 70 tonnes, down a 31-metre-long access shaft.
- Platform level: Constructed from more than 365 precast culverts, each weighing 6.5 tonnes, to create a 220-metre platform 31 metres below ground level.
Cross River Rail Engineering Manager Andrew Richmond shares that the achievement of this significant milestone is a testament to the expertise and integration of digital and cloud-based technologies in the day-to-day of the delivery team's operations.
“Throughout construction, our teams are embracing digital engineering technology… we’re using it to seamlessly connect data to designers, offices to sites, and control rooms to fleets,” he adds.
This milestone paves the way for further progress, with the CPB Contractors team looking towards the arrival of station escalators tracklaying preparations already underway within the cavern. Construction also continues on a 50-metre-deep station entrance and a secondary 28-metre-deep northern entrance.
CPB Contractors is delivering the Cross River Rail Tunnel, Stations and Development package in a consortium with fellow CIMIC Group companies Pacific Partnerships and UGL. Works in the package include tunnelling, construction of new underground stations and ongoing maintenance services.
