Major work powers ahead at Hunter Street Station

CPB Contractors’ construction of Sydney Metro’s Hunter Street Station is gaining momentum as excavation reaches 30% completion.

Three electric-powered roadheaders are currently working 30 meters underground, carving out the station cavern and turnback tunnels. The turnback tunnels to the east of the new station will allow trains to turn around before travelling back towards Westmead.

Over 149,000 tonnes of dirt have already been excavated, with the largest single excavation area reaching an impressive 235 square meters.

As the roadheaders complete their portion of the excavation works, two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) will be launched at The Bays mid this year. These TBMs will be responsible for carving out the 2.3-kilometre twin rail tunnels that will connect The Bays to Hunter Street Station via Darling Harbour.

When Sydney Metro West opens, passengers will be able to use an underground walkway to connect to metro services on the Metro North West Line and City & Southwest line at Martin Place. The completed project will also double rail capacity between Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD.

CPB Contractors is delivering the Sydney Metro West – Eastern Tunnelling Package in a joint venture. Works to be delivered under the package include 3.5 kilometres of metro tunnels between future stations at The Bays and Hunter Street in Sydney’s CBD and the excavation of caverns and shafts at Pyrmont and Hunter Street Stations.
