The dynamic nature of a career in construction

Lucy Gavigan, a CPB Contractors Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) Advisor, is assisting in the delivery of Transport for NSW’s M6 Stage 1 project. She loves the dynamic nature of the construction industry and the endless opportunities for learning and professional growth that she can get involved with.

Recently, Lucy shared details on her experience working in the industry and some words of wisdom for other females considering a career in construction.

What is it about the construction industry you enjoy?

I love the dynamic nature of the construction industry. Each day poses new challenges, creating endless opportunities for learning and professional growth. There are so many great options and a role to suit almost anyone. For me, the construction industry is more than just a job—it’s a passion fuelled by the desire to make a difference.

Tell us a bit about your day-to-day on the job?

As an HVNL Advisor, no two days are the same. My role varies and includes scheduling and dispatching, site bookings, and driver inductions, as well as risk assessments, incident reports, spot checks, and assisting with toolbox talks.

How did you end up in the construction industry?

Funnily enough, I have a business degree in which I studied economics, finance and management. However, I have always been fascinated with operations as it allows me to witness the creation of something tangible, despite the fact much of my work takes place behind the scenes. My early days in the industry began as soon as I applied for a job straight out of University. I rapidly found my feet in construction and, over the years, have worked in a myriad of roles in the Heavy Vehicle Transport field.

Can you provide some advice to women thinking of joining the industry?

As a woman, you can defy all stereotypes, go against the grain, and still dominate in a male-dominated industry. Be confident, develop your skills, and never be afraid to speak up and ask for help. Simply be yourself and do what you are most passionate about.
