David Maytom is celebrating 50 years in the construction industry and his 45th year at CPB Contractors, in a diverse career that has taken him from being an apprentice carpenter in regional NSW to Project Director on the M5 in Sydney.
David’s career has seen him build everything from freeways, tunnels and power stations to casinos, hospitals and gas plants. He grew up in Stroud, a historic town in the Hunter Valley, and began his career through a carpentry apprenticeship with a local builder, before moving on to a Newcastle construction company and joining Leighton Contractors (now CPB Contractors) in 1980 at Eraring Power Station.
David progressed from Foreman through to General Superintendent on major road, building and tunnel projects across NSW and in Brisbane.
In 2010, David moved from supervising to management on projects. He was Construction Manager on the M2 Motorway Upgrade project, Deputy Construction Director on the Gorgon Gas Project and Construction Director for the new Royal Adelaide Hospital. In 2016, David started work on the New M5 project in Sydney as Construction Director of Civil and Building Operations, before being appointed Project Director in 2018. The $4.1B M5 project (now called the M8) opened in 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
When asked what advice he’d give to young people starting their careers, David said:
“The construction industry is diverse and provides incredible opportunities. You can be an expert in your field of choice or, as I have done through my career, gain experience across a broad range of projects. CPB Contractors is the largest construction company in Australia and provides endless opportunities for people to advance their careers. I have found that being versatile and open to moving around the country is hugely rewarding, both personally and professionally.”
Reflecting on what’s special about CPB Contractors, David says: “Throughout my career I have learned a lot from the people I have worked with – from Superintendents to Construction Managers, Project Directors and everyone in between. The lessons that I took from these great people taught me how to deliver a project. We are blessed to have the best of the best in the construction industry at CPB Contractors.”
