The future of Australian aviation has officially touched down – and CPB Contractors has built the runway it landed on.
The successful landing of the first 737-jet at Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport marks a major milestone – kicking off a full-scale emergency exercise involving 300+ volunteers, state emergency services and federal agencies.
CPB Contractors, in joint venture, designed and built the airside civil and pavements work that made this moment possible:
- 3.7km of Australia's first slip-form runway
- high-intensity LED airfield lighting and advanced pavement design
- precision-graded taxiways, airside roads and drainage systems built to aviation tolerances measured in millimetres.
The scope of works for this project included airside services and utilities, aircraft pavements (runway and taxiways), aircraft isolation pad, airside roads, landscaping and aeronautical ground lighting system (including associated sub-station buildings) and other specialist systems.
This was the third project awarded by Western Sydney International Airport to the CPB Contractors and Acciona joint venture, following the earlier award of two earthworks packages.
From the bulk earthworks to the final asphalt layer, our team has helped paved the way for Sydney’s first and only 24/7 airport, opening in the second half of 2026.
