The Melbourne Airport Naarm Way Project has achieved another significant milestone with the successful installation of the third pedestrian bridge module – the largest and most complex to date.
Weighing 35 tonnes, the module was carefully moved across a rail tracking system and into position over four busy carriageways in just 3.5 hours. Supported by traffic management teams, each carriageway was temporarily closed in sequence to allow the structure to glide safely into place.
This latest module came fully fitted with eight glass panels, each weighing 600 kilograms, along with an oculus skylight in the roof. The decision to install these elements prior to lifting reduced the need for work at height and allowed for a faster, safer installation.
The milestone demonstrates the expertise, planning, and precision of the project team, as well as the strong collaboration between engineers, traffic management, and site crews. With five more modules to install, the pedestrian bridge is steadily taking shape and will soon provide a safe, accessible connection for the community.
