The METRONET Thornlie-Cockburn Link project has marked a significant milestone in construction innovation, thanks to the NEWest Alliance’s pioneering use of precast panel rotators. This smart solution has transformed the installation of noise walls along 7km of rail corridor, delivering enhanced safety, improved productivity, and reduced costs.
Traditionally, large precast concrete panels required cranes to lift and rotate them mid-air – a process that required detailed safety management and logistical effort. In a bold move to rethink this method, the NEWest Alliance – comprising the Public Transport Authority (PTA), CPB Contractors, and DT Infrastructure – invested in two purpose-built rotators.
These rotators enabled panels to be transported flat around site and rotated under their own weight in a controlled environment, eliminating the need for crane-based rotation. This innovation not only streamlined operations but also significantly reduced manual handling risks and crane time.
To date, more than 5,000 precast concrete noise wall panels have been successfully installed along the Thornlie-Cockburn Line using this method – demonstrating our commitment to certainty of delivery, leading expertise, and a sustainable future through smarter, safer construction practices.
