Our team at Suburban Connect, a joint venture between CPB Contractors, Acciona and Ghella, is making great progress on construction at Clayton, with underpinning works being executed beneath the viaduct.
This is another milestone in the delivery of Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) – a 90km rail line linking every major train service from the Frankston Line to the Werribee Line via Melbourne Airport, better connecting Victorians to jobs, retail, education, health services and each other. SRL East is the first stage of the project being delivered from Cheltenham to Box Hill, with Suburban Connect delivering the Tunnels South package from Cheltenham to Glen Waverley.
These underpinning works will reinforce the elevated rail line by building new foundations beneath one of the rail line's piers. Suburban Connect’s tunnel route will pass under the elevated rail line at this point. The new foundations for the pier will help support the bridge’s weight, redistributing the load away from the new tunnel.
The team has been working overtime during the rail occupation from 29 August to 6 September, to allow the transfer of the load from the existing foundation to the newly constructed one before wire-cutting the current piles.
