The West Gate Tunnel Project, being delivered by CPB Contractors in a joint venture with John Holland, has reached a major construction milestone, with the final diagrid module installed at the North Portal structure in early August.
This installation marks the end of a complex and coordinated operation - involving 56 major crane lifts and the assembly of more than 3,000 individual pieces of structural steel into an intricate, single-layer diagrid design.
Since work began in February, the building team has worked steadily for six months, powering through the last 12 weeks of continuous night shifts to ensure timely delivery. The scope demanded expert coordination across a mix of temporary works, work at heights, and multiple specialist contractors including riggers, crane crews, welders, and scaffolders.
This achievement was made possible through close collaboration with interfacing teams across the broader project, and sets the stage for the next phase - cladding the vent structure, which will mirror the southern counterpart.
