Early works continue to progress on the New Dunedin Hospital Project Whakatuputuptu Inpatients Building, with concrete slabs – the equivalent of 5,361m³ of concrete – now complete in preparation for the next critical phase construction.
With important foundational work completed about a month ahead of schedule, the project is now preparing for the next major milestone – steel erection, commencing in July 2026. This presents an exciting stage for the Dunedin community who will begin to see the building take shape.
This represents a major step in the 11-storey, 72,000 square metre building’s construction.
“The New Dunedin Hospital represents the largest single health facility in New Zealand serving the people of Dunedin and the wider Otago and Southland regions,” says CPB Contractors Project Manager Jason Tutty. “We’re committed to ensuring the project extends beyond quality healthcare to wider economic and social benefits, and leaving a legacy far beyond its construction.”
Delivered in partnership with Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora, the project will support around 900 full-time jobs across the life-cycle of delivery and inject around $100 million into the local economy each year. CPB Contractors is working closely with Workforce Central Dunedin on the recruitment of the workforce, with a focus on prioritising local employment.
We’re also maximising local procurement opportunities, securing long-term benefits for lower South Island communities. A Dunedin local himself, Jason adds: “The New Dunedin Hospital will have a lasting impact for the people of Dunedin and the South. There’s a real sense of pride in being part a project of this significance and I see it as a meaningful opportunity to give back to this community, so it’s very close to my heart.”
