For Iris Garcia, construction has never been just a job - it’s a discipline that rewards curiosity, resilience, and the courage to challenge how things have always been done.
With more than 10 years’ experience across the global construction industry, Iris has worked on a diverse range of projects spanning commercial, residential, retail, heritage refurbishment, government health, and major infrastructure. Today, the Area Manager brings her breadth of experience to complex infrastructure projects in New South Wales.
From engineering roots to life on site
Iris’ passion for construction was shaped early.
"I was raised in a family of engineers, so surrounded by problem-solvers from a young age. While I initially explored architecture, it was the hands-on, high-pressure environment of construction that truly resonated with me. From my first days on site, I loved the challenge - putting my boots on, asking questions, and learning how structures, methods, and people come together to deliver outcomes communities rely on every day."
What sets Iris apart is her deep interest in the structural and constructability side of the industry.
"I thrive in complexity and love identifying challenges, questioning assumptions, and finding better ways to build. Through wide ranging project experience, I've been fortunate to work across engineering, methods, and delivery roles, helping define constructability approaches, transferring knowledge to site teams, and supporting execution through to delivery. This ability to bridge my technical depth and practical leadership has made me a better engineer and leader."
Shaping the future of construction
Beyond the site, Iris is deeply committed to the future of the industry and the people within it. Since moving to Australia in 2021, she has been an active member of National Women in Construction (NAWIC), engaging in events, panels, and discussions that bring together women from across construction and adjacent industries.
"I like being able to share perspectives, learn from others, and challenge what good looks like in creating inclusive, high-performing workplaces."
Iris also volunteers her time with the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, supporting industry collaboration and assisting new arrivals to Australia by sharing her experience of working in construction locally.
Building people, not just projects
At the core of Iris’ leadership style is mentorship.
"I've been lucky enough to have strong mentors throughout my career, so I'm passionate about creating environments where people feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. I'm a strong believer that mentorship is a two-way exchange - and I'm certain I get just as much out of the experience as my mentor does from me."
Driven, curious, and unafraid to push boundaries, Iris represents a new generation of construction leaders - technically capable, people-focused, and committed to shaping an industry that is innovative, inclusive, and future-ready.
