The Department for Infrastructure and Transport’s Main South Road Duplication Project – Stage 2, delivered by the Fleurieu Connections Alliance, has officially opened to traffic, marking a major milestone for the region and creating lasting benefits for local communities and businesses.
Funded by the Australian and South Australian governments, the project doubles the capacity of Main South Road between Aldinga and Sellicks Beach, improving safety, reducing congestion, and providing better connections to the iconic Fleurieu Peninsula. Delivery included the new Aldinga underpass, upgraded intersections, and a dedicated shared path linking Aldinga to Sellicks Beach for pedestrians and cyclists.
With major works now complete, Fleurieu Connections Alliance General Manager Andrew Coonan reflected on the significance of the achievement.
“Completing Stage 2 and opening the road in its final configuration is a proud moment for the entire team,” says Andrew.
“This upgrade is delivering safer travel and better connections for the Fleurieu Peninsula. It’s been a true collaboration with local communities and businesses, and we’re excited to see the lasting legacy for years to come.”
The project’s social and economic impact has been substantial:
- Over 99% local workforce, with more than two million work hours delivered by South Australians.
- 95% of contracts awarded to South Australian businesses, strengthening the regional economy.
- 400+ jobs supported each year, building skills and capability across the state.
- A greener corridor with native tree planting and landscaping to enhance the environment.
While major works are now complete, finishing works such as landscaping and minor detailing will continue over the coming months.
