Delivering major aviation infrastructure demands collaboration, precision, pragmatic innovation, and absolute certainty of delivery.
The Western Sydney International Airport Airside and Civil Pavements (WSA ACP) Project, delivered by the CPB Contractors ACCIONA Joint Venture, showcases CPB Contractors’ capability in delivering complex airport and runway infrastructure at scale - safely, sustainably and ahead of schedule.
The project involved the delivery of significant airside and civil pavement infrastructure, including:
- More than 246,000m3 of fill cut to accommodate the new airside roads
- 72,000m3 of rigid pavement placed
- Some 680 Aeronautical Ground Lighting (AGL) cans installed along the new runway.
From the outset, the team invested heavily in proof-of-concept initiatives, working collaboratively with subcontractors and industry specialists to optimise construction methodologies and productivity. This proactive approach enabled the project to successfully navigate stringent aviation specifications and global supply chain disruptions - ultimately delivering physical works four months ahead of schedule.
Operating within a highly complex environment, the project required coordination across five major contractor interfaces, multiple stakeholders and strict regulatory frameworks. Innovative solutions, including advanced slipform paving technology and a pioneering self-healing electrical system, delivered several Australian aviation industry firsts while improving efficiency and reducing carbon impacts.
Beyond construction outcomes, the project delivered strong social and economic value. Approximately 45% of contracts were awarded to local businesses, supporting regional employment and economic growth, while meaningful engagement with Indigenous and social enterprises ensured a lasting legacy for the community.
The WSA ACP project demonstrates how disciplined planning, innovation and trusted collaboration enable CPB Contractors to deliver certainty on complex aviation projects - setting new benchmarks for runway construction in Australia and reinforcing our capability to deliver critical infrastructure that supports future growth.
