TasWater's Selfs Point Sewage Treatment Plant expanding to support growing population

The TasWater Alliance, a partnership between TasWater, UGL and CPB Contractors (members of the CIMIC Group), and WSP Australia, continues to progress its delivery of water infrastructure projects across Tasmania. The expansion of TasWater’s Selfs Point Sewage Treatment Plant is now underway and once operational, it will better support the needs of Hobart’s growing population.

Designed to replace a Macquarie Point treatment facility built in the 1970s, the upgraded Selfs Point Treatment Plant will deliver improved treatment capacity and environmental outcomes and feature state-of-the-art facilities and treatment technologies. Its treatment capacity will more than double, going from 10.4 Megalitres a day to 24.9 Megalitres a day, improving water quality and reducing nutrient discharge into the Derwent River by 50%.

“The upgraded plant will play a vital role in supporting Hobart’s growth by enhancing wastewater management and creating new benchmarks for efficiency and sustainability,” says Steven Ross, UGL National Operations Manager – Water.

UGL and CPB Contractors project delivery teams will integrate advanced membrane bioreactor technology into the facility, which will set a new standard for environmental stewardship in Tasmania, explains Andrew Kennedy, CPB Contractors Operations Manager - Water.

“The Selfs Point Sewage Treatment Plant upgrade will transform the way Hobart treats and manages wastewater, its technology will significantly enhance the quality of discharge from the Selfs Point plant,” adds Andrew.

The TasWater Alliance, a partnership between TasWater, UGL and CPB Contractors, is driving the delivery of this expansion project as part of the TasWater Capital Works program.
