Where every conversation is an opportunity to learn

Sapna Mistry joined the Systems Connect Line-wide team in 2021 as an undergraduate mechanical engineer in the Temporary Services Team. Working part time, Sapna has been able to gain invaluable on-the-job experience, while working towards completing her Bachelor’s Degree, Mechanical Engineering (Hons) & Commerce (Finance) at the University of NSW.

Sapna is responsible for gas monitoring in the tunnels’ ventilation systems and ensuring the air supply/extraction units are working to efficiently remove dangerous gases and contaminants from the tunnel environment, which is critical in protecting the health and safety of workers.

“I appreciate the opportunities that this role provides, including exposure to the tangible delivery of the project, the practical experience I gain from doing inspections in the tunnels and the ongoing conversations I have with all the workers onsite,” Sapna said.

“Every conversation becomes an opportunity to ask questions and to learn more so that I can make informed recommendations for the ventilation strategies, which change with the different phases of the project,” she said.

Sapna’s team is very supportive of her busy university schedule, allowing her the flexibility to adapt her hours as required. “Having a flexible workplace arrangement has allowed me to continue my studies and pursue my other passion - encouraging young women into engineering roles through my involvement with the UNSW Women in Engineering Society.”

“Diversity boosts innovation, drives sustainable growth, and improves financial performance, which is why I am passionate about inspiring younger women to consider engineering as a career path,” she said.

“I never want to be in a role that’s boring. I want to be able to use my critical thinking and problem-solving skills in every aspect of my job and to see the tangible outputs of the work I have delivered. I experience this working at Systems Connect Line-wide, where no one day is the same as the last,” she said.
