An upgraded road network to support future growth
In 2017, CPB Contractors was awarded a contract by the Victorian Government to deliver the Western Highway Duplication Section 2B, as part of a 50:50 joint venture.
Construction commenced in early 2018 and was subsequently placed on hold while Major Road Projects Victoria (MPRV) worked with Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation, the Registered Aboriginal Party, to prepare and seek approval for a new Cultural Heritage Management Plan (CHMP).
Following the successful commencement of site investigations and enabling works earlier in 2026, CPB Contractors - in partnership with the Victorian Infrastructure Delivery Authority (VIDA) and Seymour Whyte - have commenced major works.
This represents a major step forward in improving safety, reliability and freight efficiency along one of western Victoria's key regional freight and transport corridors.
The contract will deliver approximately $205 million revenue to CPB Contractors.
The joint venture with Seymour Whyte Constructions on the 12 km section between Buangor and Ararat will deliver:
- An additional 12-kilometre lane in both directions between Buangor and Ararat.
- A new centre median and new barriers to separate carriageways.
- A new interchange at Hillside Road.
- New bridges over the railway line and the Hopkins River.
As the principal road link between Melbourne and Adelaide, the Western Highway serves interstate trade between Victoria and South Australia.
